1950s Style Picnic

We're having an in-character 1950s style picnic on July 24th, 2010 (rescheduled from the rainy July 10th) to celebrate the launch of our Adventure blog! One of the blog's head writers, Kim Hula will be hosting. When you stop in, be sure to give her your ideas for Boston adventures you'd like us to write about (or send us a note).

Come dressed in your 1950s best! If you aren't interested in eating, come for the swell conversation and sideways glances from strangers. You don't have to bring food if you aren't eating, but soda in a glass bottle would be a nice touch.

For info on 50s fashion for men and women, slang, and fads you might discuss with strangers and each other, check out http://www.fiftiesweb.com/fashion/fashion.htm

We're going to remember the GOOD times about the 50s. You'll act like the year is 1957, but minus the sexist bigotry and racism. Fear of the bomb is healthy and encouraged.

Adventure

facebook-eventDid you play Adventure on July 3rd? Did you make it to the end? Did you know we have prizes?

If you took photos, add them to your profile here (or elsewhere) and send us a message with your username to let us know. We will judge our favorite photos (this does not mean best quality) and mail the winners prizes. The grand prize is... a SECRET!

Yes, it's a secret, spontaneous adventure!

If you cracked the extra secret code and sent us your username, we will send Interropoints to your account. You will also receive Interropoints for every Interrobang you photographed. You can also get niceties by sharing your experience with a comment below

This is our first time trying this type of game- what are your thoughts? Send us a message or comment below with your suggestions and ideas for next time. We know it was hard. There was little time and lots of difficult puzzles. Only half of the players got through the main puzzles to get to the final game ("phone tag"). To those of you who beat the game, CONGRATS! That's some mighty fast thinking and moving.

To the out-of-towners that got lost- we're sorry! We'll make it clearer next year, promise! To everyone else, we hope you had a good time, even if you got lost or couldn't decipher all the clues. And if you didn't have a great time, we hope you at least got a nice looking tan :-P

Time for an Adventure

The new Adventures in Spontaneity blog is dedicated to helping you live more spontaneously. What does it mean to live a life of "spontaneous adventure"? Generally, it means saying "Yes" to opportunities with risk. Our not-completely-fearless bloggers will keep you up to date with adventure opportunities you can say Yes to. New adventure opportunities will appear here soon- feel free to submit your own via our contact page.

To me, an adventure is a mindset regarding risks for reward. It's willfully going into something that may be uncomfortable or dangerous with the hope of coming out of it a more satisfied individual. It's hiking Mt. Washington. It's family reunions. It's mind; it's body; it's all relative.

Adventure surfaces when we allow ourselves the opportunity to do the things we otherwise wouldn’t do. It may be shared or solitary but should always leave the adventurer with a feeling of accomplishment, instead of adversity; courage in place of coercion; dreams defeating doldrums... It is a product of our own making that has the brilliant potential to morph into something different every moment of every day... and I can’t get enough.

Getting lost—on purpose. Engaging in a conversation with a perfect stranger, then asking if you can take their picture. Riding the T without pants on. Getting up on stage and making people laugh at your teenage foibles. Throwing a party in your pajamas. Asking your favorite rock star to scream into a camera. Agreeing to blog for fellow adventurers. Opening your heart up to friendship, love—and pain—knowing that it will give you the courage to be a more whole, more confident person. This is what adventure is to me.

Adventures are experiences that push the boundaries of our comfort-zone. For me, an adventure is about learning; it's about trying new things. Adventures can be found anywhere; atop mountains, under spotlights, and even in your own home. All it takes is a bit of courage, personal motivation, and an extra pair of underwear.
